Gaston Memorial Hospital is a direct outgrowth of the old City Hospital which opened with nine beds in November 1908

Four years later, the hospital had outgrown its original quarters and in 1912, moved to the third floor of the Realty Building on Main Avenue.  That building no longer stands.

In 1924, the hospital again relocated and was designed to accommodate 46 beds.

At the close of World War II, Gaston Post 23, American Legion, initiated a drive to raise funds through public subscription to purchase the City Hospital and enlarge it to meet the critical hospital needs of the community. The name of the hospital was changed to Gaston Memorial Hospital in 1946, and a private not-for-profit corporation was formed under the North Carolina General Statutes; this corporation still exists today. This building, located on Highland Avenue and referred to for many years as the “old” hospital was constructed in 1947.  Gaston Memorial Hospital established a school of nursing, which 307 students graduated before closing in 1973. As the need for hospital beds and facilities continued to increase, the hospital relocated to its current site in 1973.  Today, Gaston Memorial Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility, licensed to operate 442 beds. In 1984, the hospital began a reorganization process and established a parent company, Gaston Health Care, Inc., with subsidiaries that allowed the hospital to enter into health care-related businesses.  The reorganization was completed March 1, 1987. Radiation Oncology Center -- A radiation oncology center opened in 1989 to provide state-of-the art radiation therapy for patients with cancer. Northeast Tower -- A four-level addition to the hospital (three levels above ground) was opened in 1992. Comprehensive Cancer Center -- In 1993, Gaston Memorial became one of only seven hospitals in North Carolina to earn a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program designation from the American College of Surgeons.

In 1994, a second linear accelerator was added to provide advanced treatment for cancer patients.

Cardiac Rehab Center -- The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, formerly operated under the name “Healthplus,” became part of Gaston Health Care in 1995.    CaroMont Heart Center, The Carolinas Heart Institute - Gastonia -- With the addition of open-heart surgery to the hospital’s existing array of cardiac services, Gaston Heart Center was formed in July 1998.

Southeast Expansion -- Gaston Memorial launched another major expansion in 1998.  This project expands the main hospital building to the southeast, providing additional space for surgery, radiology, laboratories and support services.

In February of 2000, Gaston Health Care was changed to CaroMont Health.  The new name was created to better reflect the area served.
